What is the MCAT and How is it Structured?
The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is a standardized exam used to evaluate applicants’ readiness for medical school. The computer-based exam contains 230 multiple-choice questions across four sections: Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems, Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills (CARS), Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems, and Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior. The exam includes 6 hours and 15 minutes of testing content and approximately 7 hours and 30 minutes of total seated time.
Why Medical School Candidates Struggle with the MCAT
The MCAT requires candidates to integrate knowledge from biology, biochemistry, chemistry, physics, psychology, and sociology while analyzing unfamiliar research passages and experimental data. Success depends on more than memorizing scientific facts and formulas. Candidates must apply foundational concepts, interpret graphs and study designs, evaluate evidence, and maintain concentration throughout one of the longest graduate admission exams. Many students struggle with passage timing, CARS reasoning, interdisciplinary questions, and the mental stamina required for test day.
